Default 1994 Buick Check Engine Light unable to read codes

I am working in a 1994 Buick Le Sabre that has an OBD II port, but I cannot read the codes. Do I need to get a better/different scanner. I know how to turn the light off, but I cannot get the codes to turn off the light. Any suggestions other than throwing parts at it.

The first thing that comes to mind is that is an OBD1 system. OBD II didn't come out until 1996. What you will need to do is jumper two terminals (A to B). Here is a picture that should help.

I had also bought a OBD I reader and it wont plug into the port, the OBD II reader will though. The ALDL is not populated in 'B' either.

Strange. I have used a paper clip quite a few times when I was turning some wrenches. Does this help?

Instructions

  1. Early Model GM Vehicles
    • 1 Locate the OBD (on-board diagnostic) terminal below the dash and just to the left of the steering column. If it is rectangular and has 12 cavities, it is the old style, and codes can be retrieved without a scanner. If it is square with pins, it is the new style.
    • 2 Place the paper clip in the far top-right terminals. Turn the ignition key to the "on" position, and make note of the check engine light flashes. Count the number of flashes in sequence between pauses. Each code consists of two numbers. The number 12 will always flash first. It just means the computer is not receiving any signals indicating the vehicle is running. The engine is off, so it will repeat this twice before preceding. A "flash, flash, flash, pause, flash" is interpreted as a code 31. It will flash each code three times and move on to the next code.
    • 3 Remove the paper clip when all the codes are retrieved and turn off the ignition. Cross-reference the codes with the link below. It has a listing of all the early codes and their meanings.
    • 4 Repair all code problems in order to reset the computer and turn off the light. To reset the computer, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and re-connect the terminal.

OK, I THINK I found the answer you need. Using your paper clip jumper terminals 4 & 5. Then count the flashes of the check engine light.

The X terminals are not used on this plug.
