Default whoopie! Rear spring time!

It never ends does it!!

Jumped on the flat bed today to help load some crap, and hear a 'dink'. I recognized it immediately. Broke leaf spring.

These are the 3/1 (4 total) leafs, and has the 2 leaf contact over-loads. my spring pak thickness is
basically 2-3/16ths inch thick.

So I think I've found some replacement choices;
one is rated @ 3600 lbs, is a 4/1 pak, and 2-11/16ths thick
Other one is rated @ 4000 lbs, is a full 8 leaf and 3-9/16ths thick.

I'm assuming the 3600# choice is higher than the OEM?? Anybody know those specs?? ~2850-3000# is kinda what I've seen...
If I went with the 4000# spring, I'd probably eliminate the over-loads? The extra thickness of the pak would raise the overloads to making contact all the time??
Kinda leaning to the 3600# based on cost, especially if they are 600-700# heavier than stock!

Springs? You don't need springs. A rubber block will work!! LOL I am guessing you need them for your 3500? Here is a place that has some info that may help: I don't know what the factory springs are rated for, but my '96 2500 has the tow package and has the same springs as a 3500.

yep.. actually there is very little difference in 2500's and 3500's. the 2500's and manual came with dana 80.. springs were the same.
Brake width is the only thing I've found different... and of course the dual wheel.

well, General Spring out of KC got the nod this morning.

I got basically the identical spring that came with my truck, but has 1 extra leaf. The spring pack thickness will be a little more.
I did a lot of searching for oem specs, and the best I could find is 2800-2900 rating.
These new springs are 3600#. They run 159 each, and with shipping, new U-bolts (had to get slightly longer ones) , came to 497.00 Just got the email saying everything shipped..
Sonny already has all the hardware broke loose. I dreaded the fuel tank side, but he claims there is room to get the bolt out between the rail and fuel tank.. barely!!

update on the spring R+R

Still had to remove rear fuel tank strap and loosen the front to push the rear of the tank closer to the driveshaft.. Good thing too! the strap broke right at the sharp bend, only a nub hanging on for some time now.. Might of been a blessing in disguise.
Since we have the flatbed on it, there was plenty of filler hose slack to move the tank w/o disconnecting the hose.

Man, those springs are HEAVY. either that, or I'm wearing down with age! About blew out my sphincter..
New oem style shocks, front and rear, new 'slightly' heavier rear springs, and that ol girl sits nice and 'firm' now!
On the spring that didn't break, we found the front rubber bushing had slid about an inch, and the spring eye was starting to cut into the spring perch.. nice round gouge imprinted now.. probably have to keep an eye on that for future cracks!

Truck sure handles different now. doesn't grab at the wheel tracks in gravel roads, and body roll is non-existent.

Glad everything went well! Surprising how much of a difference there is when things are back to tight. Hopefully now it will be a long time before the next major repair.........
