Default Broke My Truck

Well, I broke it again. Not sure what I did, but I am hoping it isn't fatal...... Wife and I were coming back from a store to the campground where our trailer is and was climbing a hill. I started loosing power (felt fuel related) and part way up the hill I heard a BANG. I thought it was a turbo boot, but when I was pullng over there was a terrible racket that to me sounded like I was dragging the driveshaft. When I put it in park it sounded like when you put an auto in park while still moving. I shut the truck off and looked underneath expecting to see something. Well, all looked normal! No oil or fluids of any kind except the condensation from the A/C. I tried to start the truck and the starter spins and it sounds like it is engaged inthe ring gear but the engine does not turn over. That means either the flex plate broke or the crankshaft broke. I am really leaning and hoping the flexplate isthe problem.Really, really hoping...... While waiting for a tow, my wife stumbled getting out of the truck and went down. Even with my lack of medical training I knew she broke a bone in her wrist (you could see it). So, for a while I had an ambulance there, a Highway patrol, and a Sherrif's deputy all with lights on and then a wrecker with his lights on. It was impressive..... I had my wife going one way in an ambulance and my truck going the opposite way on a hook. Thanks to some good samaritans I got to the hospital and back with my wife. Now to see about renting something to drive........

Well, I know what the problem is. I pulled the inspection cover and found this:

I found a place to fix it for about $650 and they said it will be done by this Friday! Now to see about fixing my wife.........

Yea, truck is easy. The OR told us to get ahold of this orthopaedic doctor first thing this morning. I have called them twice and no call back as of 3:42PM and I called the first time at about 8:30AM. Frustrating...........

You might try calling her normal physician, they might be able to get in touch with the other doctor quicker.

I got a call from the Drs office at almost 5PM. Tomorrow at 9:45AM she has an appointment. That will determine what our travel plans are. At least things are progressing and I feel a bit more relaxed. I didn't sleep more than about five total hours last night.........

I went and checked on my truck...... It is supposed to be done this afternoon!!

On the other issue, my wife is having surgery tomorrow. They are going to put a plate and a couple of screws to hold everything together.

Got my truck back yesterday!! WOO HOO! I had rented a car (Ford Focus) for a week. That was going to be about $260, but the way things worked out it only cost me $52. No to get my wife through the day. She is having surgery today too put a small plate and some screws in to hold the end of the bone in place while it heals. Fortunately it is just common day surgery. Now it looks like my plans to replace my truck are gone again. Turns out we have to pay for this whole incident out of pocket. So far Tuesday cost me about $8,000 and we haven't seen the ambulance bill or the ER bill........ I am guessing that it will turn out to be about $11,000 for everything.......

MnTom,
Sorry to read about your troubles. Sounds like if you didn't have bad luck you wouldn't have any at all. I don't know what you folks have for Medical Insurance but for us, we had excellent coverage with Blue Cross, {I said "use to"} Since Obamacare took over our Insurance isn't worth much because the coverage has changed declined and deductibles have increased.

As for Trucks, repairing is about all the average retiree can afford, and repairs are sky high but compared to the new or late model used, repairs look like the only way to go. I'm always looking at Trucks for sale but a five- year- old pickup with over 100K is still 20 to 40K.

I hope everything works out for you.
