Default new starter installed

our '00 needed a new starter last week, and ordered a new Bosch. For some reason, I thought that was the brand originally used. Denso was what was in there.
That Bosch certainly has it's own unique sound!
Anyway, about 160$ for a brand new starter, and rolling again!

Is the Bosch a gear reduction type?

LOL.. good question!
Sonny ordered it thru RA, and I never even looked at it! I'll crawl under it and see if the main motor is inline with the pinion, or if it's offset with a gear reducer.
As fast as it sounds while cranking, I'd almost bet it is a gear reducer type...

OK! here it is direct from the website.

so yep, it is a gear reducer type.

Gear reduction seems to be a better way in my opinion. There is also a bit less weight inmost cases too.

What was the original, gear reduction or not ? And was it the original that came with the truck ? If so, 16 years old, you did sort of got your moneys worth from it.

I found the old starter today.. (one of the benefits of buying 'new'... NO CORE RETURN!!)
It's built by Denso, and has "Chrysler Corp" on the sticker. I'd say it's safe to say it's the original, the truck was only 5 YO when we bought it.
My son says other than the stickers, they were basically identical in appearance. (It too is a gear reduction model)

Funny how "different" manufacturers have parts that look identical!

That German 'Bosch' starter has 'made in Mexico' all over it.. Not sure where the original Denso was built.. My ag tractors with Denso components pretty much have Japan on them.

I understand the want and need to spread products assembly / manufacturing all over the world for the cost factors. But it seems with the cost factors they're concerned with, the quality has seemed to have drop or demand for quality has lessen in many products.

Products don't last as long as they have in the past. I had a little 1/2 ton that had 400k on it and never touched the starter. That was a pre one-world global market product. In fact, the normal wear and tear items and a O2 sensor because I broke the wire while under the truck ... 'MY' fault.
Now days ??
