Default Wont Start

I have a 98.5 ram cummins that won't start. I'm pretty sure its the VP44, although I want to be extra sure with some opinions of others. The leading symptoms have been dead pedal, and it intermittently won't start when hot. This makes me believe it was the vp44 computer. I loosened the fuel lines at the injectors and most was coming out of 3, and hardly any was coming from 1. Solenoids? How much fuel is supposed to be coming out of the fuel lines? Seemed like a small amount for having over 10,000psi when its running. It was practically the same pressure as when the electric pump was on and the engine was cranking, not running. No codes ever. I've had one code pop up when I unplugged the VP during an electrical test, which it passed the test. I cleared the codes and haven't seen another. I did read somewhere that you need to read the codes at the computer on the engine, as opposed to the OBD2 computer. I have a fuel pressure gauge which has always been around 15psi. I also bought some 100hp injector nozzles from DSS that I have yet to put in, any thoughts on those?

I found a looooong list of diagnostic tests on bluechipdiesel, one was talking about "hotwiring" the VP, what is that testing, the computer or the pump mechanics?

That sure sounds like the VP has bit the dust. From what I understand the electronics are not repairable to the average person meaning the VP needs to be replaced. I have heard of quite a few VPs that die without any code thrown.

My dad is an electrical engineer, so one of my thoughts was to maybe have him repair it. If it is something as easy as bad solder, I could do it myself haha.

Well, I have seen where some have claimed the electronics issue was fairly easy to repair if you have some electronics knowledge, but I would need to search for the info. There is also the possibility of the VP having mechanical problems. THIS will give you lots of reading and you could also go to the DOWNLOADS section and grab a copy of the fuel pump manual.

A service manual is invaluable when troubleshooting and repairing your own vehicle. There are fuel system tests that need to be performed for your year truck. That would be the first place to start. It would explain how to check the lift pump, rail pressure ect. Be careful, the high pressure from the VP44 can cause serious bodily harm or death !!

Tiger, just an FYI, if you look at the Downloads section there are lots of manuals there and if you find any others we can put them there too!
