Default Barking Turbo Under Load

I was just recently in the Black Hills with my truck and fiver, GVW of about 16,800 pounds. I was pulling a hill in O/D and the RPMs were dropping. I was seeing about 28 PSI boost and RPMs were down to about 1700, pyrometer was at about 1100*. I was almost to the top of the hill and the RPMs dropped a bit more and the turbo started barking something terrible. This was on a steady pull so why would the turbo bark? I tried it again to see if it would do it again and sure enough, it did. I don't understand why the turbo would bark under a steady pull like that. Anyone have an explanation I can wrap my mind around?

Not that we don't care, but I never had this happen to me. Something to ponder over At least, if someone barks in, I can keep up with the thought.

Nope. I have not been running propane for a while since around here it is about $4 a gallon.

Tom I have to ask what are your calling "barking"? My understanding of barking is when the boost is very high and the throttle is cut too rapidly not allowing the boost to reduce, and thus all that built up boost pressure shoves its way back through the compressor rapidly stopping or shoving the impeller in the opposite direction. VERY bad for the turbo. Turbos can make a whooshing noise as well but thats merely a far far lesser effect of barking and just the noise the air makes rushing past the impeller. That said, I have to agree that I've never heard of a turbo barking while under throttle. Matter of fact, I'm not sure if thats physically possible. So we're either understanding "barking" as two different things here or there's some strange phenomenon going on. The only thing I could think of which may be what you heard was the turbo bearing bushing howling from lack some sort of lack of lubrication. Have you checked how your impeller feels? Does it spin nicely and with no side to side movement?

Well, what it does is start going "WOOF, WOOF, WOOF, etc. and even the boost gauge goes bananas going from 30 psi to about maybe 10 psi and back real quickly. It sounds and acts the same as when it shifts in to overdrive with the boost over about 10 psi. This truck did the same thing only worse when I changed the head gasket the first time and I never did figure that one out either. At this point it is not a problem...... It won't move anyhow.......

Sure sound like turbo bark to me. I've heard and seen the same thing with my truck with the boost gauge slamming down from high boost to low boost and back up again.

Yea.... That is what really has me confuzzled. I have had it bark by letting out of the throttle to quick, when it shifts quick, but I just can't figure out the under load part........

Barking is typically caused from a loss of drive pressure.
