Default Cruise control

So I've been having this problem with my truck pretty much since I got it four years ago. Not really a big deal, just makes me curious lol.

My cruise control works fine most of the time, but in the winter when my truck is cold the cruise won't work. It sets the cruise, but then it's like I'm holding down the accelerate button. It will just keep accelerating until I turn the cruise off. After my truck warms up it works just fine.

Any ideas? The truck is a '98 dodge cummins.

SAME EXACT PROBLEM! Not sure what the deal is with it. Does make me wonder if wrapping it in some of that silver insulation and heat tape would make it work better. I don't know if the little seals get so cold that they cant work right or what. I just turn mine on and off a bunch and eventually it works.

I don't know how you set yours but on dodgeram.org it had a writeup saying NOT to let off the pedal and hit set as this makes it think there is slack in the pedal and it does the accelerating thing. I guess it "learns" how much slack is in the line. It said you are supposed to hold it at the speed, set it, then let it start pulling on it before you let off. Says if you did it the other way you have to do it this way 15 times to "unlearn" the slack. I've had mixed results but maybe it will work better for you. I'm missing a spring so it doesn't pull the throttle back with as much tension so I assume that messes with it as well.

Here I thought you would have the answer. I have been trying to figure this out for four years. Mine does just fine in the cold, so I have no idea.

Here's the article. http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1995/08-16-95A.htm

That article says 94-96 though, I wonder if they use a different type of setup if it is not for 97-98.

Now one thing I have noticed is I took apart the vacuum controller and one of the coils for the vacuum actuator-majigers is crapping out. Only seemed to work every now and then like it was sticky. I did everything I could to make it work better but no amount of oil, elbow grease, rage, seemed to help it. I think that is the cause but not sure. Maybe I should go across the street to the junkyard and rip one of the actuator sets out of a 94-96. I'll try and do that tomorrow.

From what I have read that seems to be the common problem. Apparently a servo gets sticky. Once things warm up it works fine. Wonder if there is a fix other than replacement?

I haven't run cruise yet on 9 yet. When I did run 9, I was towing 15k.

The 2002's are completely electronic as far as the cruise control is concerned so I don't see how it would ever screw up.

Yea. I used to run a smarty and the problem is the increased power/throttle response. I had issues with mine no matter what, so just ran my smarty on 2 at most times. You can also try resetting your APPS sensor to see if that takes care of it.
