Default Ram 2500 (non-cummins) questions..

So I'm looking for another truck.. Yes, a Cummins would be my ideal choice, but funds say otherwise.
I've found a guy with a 94 2500 auto (here we go again, for those that remember ) with a V10 2500 4WD. Says he gets 12-13mpg consistently.. That seems pretty sad, but I guess it is what it is.. He's wanting to trade for my Jetta TDI, straight up.

I know nothing of the V10s, so if anyone has any insight, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Like:

Are they proned for failures?
Are they stupid expensive to fix?
Key points to look for when purchasing a V10?

I know all the other crap like ball joints, steering, axle leaks, etc..

While I have no experience with a V-10, from what I have seen and read they are quite reliable. About the worst I have heard was a belt tensioner by about 150k miles. My understanding is they use the same 47RH/RE transmissions that the Cummins use but with a different torque converter. Other than the mileage the other 'problem' I have heard about was they will spin the rear tires easily trying to get moving, but that is right foot controlled......

Yeah, I've read that the mpg is generally between 13-18mpg.. The higher end of that would be "okay", as it would be a daily driver.. however, my old '97 Cummins DRW was a solid 10, regardless

Google says it's rated at 310/450, and it does use the 47 series trans. However, I believe that the '94 uses an RH, rather than the RE, and we all know my historical hair-pulling with the 47RE..

With the 310/450, I don't see towing being an issue...
