Default Pre 1996 Computer Codes

To retrieve the computer codes from a pre 1996 (pre-OBDII) vehicle, with the key method:

1. Set the parking brake, and put the transmission in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual).

2. Raise the engine speed to approximately 2500 RPM and slowly let the speed down to idle.

3. Cycle the Air Conditioning system, if equipped (on briefly, then off).

4. Foot on the brake, Automatic transmissions, select each position on the transmission (reverse, neutral, drive, X, X, X) then back to Park. This will obtain any fault
codes linked to the transmission sensors, A/C sensors, and engine sensors.

5. Turn the key on, off, on, off, on, leaving it on the last time, the codes will begin to flash. The first number, pause, and then the second number.

Make sure to write down the numbers to retrieve the code.

To clear the codes, make sure that if you have a stereo equipped with an anti-theft system, you have the correct activation code before disconnecting the battery. The trouble codes may be cleared by disconnecting the negative battery cable for at least 15 seconds.

These are the codes derived from the flashing light blinker, with the first number, pause, last number. Some codes have more than one meaning, these are separate by a "/", in order to tell them apart.
