Default Propane Questions

With the price of diesel I have been thinking about propane for my truck. Stodg73, I know you are running propane and was wondering what you think of it. I tow a 28' fifthwheel and a 16' boat with a CGVW of just over 17k lbs. and was wondering what it would do for my fuel mileage. I am not looking for any more power, but looking for mileage. Any suggestions?

When I put propane on mine, I got about a 5 mpg increase for diesel. This is empty, so the fuel increase might be a bit smaller for your truck, as everyone has different tunes. The cost of my system was about $500, and it took about 7500 miles to pay it off, with propane at $2.30 per gallon and diesel above $3.00 per gallon.

Here is a DOT approved tank near you: Minneapolis DOT propane tank

You will need a 12 foot hose and a 5 foot hose, some zip ties, some wiring for the switch, 2 3/8" x 1" nipples, and 1 90* 3/8" elbow.

I also used another shutoff solenoid at the tank for safety. Here is a link for that.

Wow, 5 MPG? That would put me up to 25 MPG consistent. That would be good. Any idea as to how much it would increase the MPG towing?

Since I don't tow that often, I would say maybe about 1 - 2 mpg with the weight that you described. Maybe a little less. I have been towing recently, about 10k and I am getting about 13.6 mpg with my SMARTY turned up to level 5, generally, I run the SMARTY on level 1 the mileage setting.

The way that I have my system set up is for mileage, not power. So in this way, I get to go further with the same amount of fuel.

I like the propane in that I get more mileage than before.

I mounted my 12 gallon DOT tank under the crossover box in the bed of my truck. It is attached to both the bed and the box. I had to lift the box with 4" spacers to be high enough for the tank. The tank is centered between the frame rails also.


Propane tank under the crossover box, look at the bedrails of the crossover box and see the 4" spacers.


Close up of the propane tank, repainted about the same color as the truck. You can also see the secondary shut-off solenoid with a steel strap going around it for safety, with grade 8 bolts used.


In this pic, you can see the 4" spacer that I used to lift the box up with.

Thanks for the pictures. Now if I hadn't bought a headache rack and a computer.......... That is something I am really thinking about. If anyone else has any info it would really be appreciated!!:cool:

I was just wondering..... Since you have your Hobbs switch to come on at 4psi, that would not work real good for me. Most of the time empty on level roads I am at 0psi and only 550* on the pyrometer. Need to figure out how to do that one........

I actually reset my hobbs switch to about 2 psi. It does help some, but most of the time the propane isnt on at all. My cruising psi is about 4 for 60 mph, and at 75 mph, my psi is about 6. Pyrometer is at about 500* at 60 mph, and at about 650* at 75 mph.
