Default ASD Question

I have run into this before, but never knew the answer. Someone please educate me as what the ASD (auto shut down) relay is for?

At least what I understand from the gasoline engine, it was use to shut down the engine in the event that it was being used outside normal operating range. Like run it past redline it would start cutting out.

As for the Cummins its rather weird setup still. The ASD relay is present and it controlled by the PCM. Which when know the PCM has no real connection with the engine (other that gauges on the 12V).

I just went and double checked, There is no ASD relay or wiring in my PDC (I thought there was one there). HOWEVER, I do have a relay labeled ABS PUMP OR DUAL TANK RELAY 3. Anyone have any idea what this relay is for? Dual tank relays 1 & 2 are also labeled fog lamp so I know what they would be used for, but I don't have fog lights.

I got the diagram downloaded, but after page 21 I gave up looking for the ABS pump relay. I will look in the morning again.

That page is for full ABS. I only have RWAL and still did not see what the Fuel Pump Relay does on my truck.

I looked at the cover to the PDC on mine again and I was mistaken. I do have an ASD relay on my truck, but if I unplug it nothing happens (the truck keeps running). So what purpose would it serve on a 12V?

That's the thing that baffles me is the ASD relay on the Diesel series... Being the V8 gasser get the fuel injector power and coil power from the ASD relay so in the gasser series it is used for shutdown of the engine if the PCM detects a problem (like over rev).

But looking at the wiring for the diesel it just loops back to the PCM...

The ASD relay talk helped my hired guy fix his cutting out issue on his 97 gasser. He had over revved his engine many times and it blew the relay. He changed that out and the truck runs great again.
