Oh, I forgot to tell you that during all the testing the ASD relay was and still is sitting on my cup holder....... Kind of dumb to put something like that in that does nothing.

I just wonder if its energized or not when the key is on or if its some weird backwards deal. Maybe you could turn the key on and slide it in and see if it clicks. The ground being controlled by the PCM is what makes me wonder.

I will have to check it to see if it is energized with the key on, but I didn't feel it click when I pulled it with the truck running. I get the opportunity I will check.

Well, I found something out that the ASD solenoid does..... Somehow it makes the transmission shift! I had some issues with the transmission without the solenoid in place (look here: http://www.dieseltrucksite.com/showt...=6748#post6748). Weird......

Very weird. I thought you drove it without it for a while?

Well, I did drive it, but only a couple of miles. I have a theory as to what is going on, but maybe when I get out of bed later today I will be able to test it. My theory is since my truck is an early model '96 (built in late '95, one of the first RE trans.) the computer software is slightly 'different' than later models. For instance, I tried putting a lock up switch on and all it would do is put the transmission into limp mode. No matter what I did after it was in limp the ONLY way to get it out of limp was to shut the truck off and restart it. So I am thinking that when I first pulled the ASD relay I had already started the truck and the computer saw the relay. The next time I started the truck the computer didn't see the relay and somehow it didn't know what to do. I put the relay in with the truck off and when I tested it it shifted fine again. What I plan on doing is to start the truck, pull the relay and go for a drive. If it shifts fine I am going to shut the truck off and restart it without the relay and see what happens. IF it doesn't shift properly I am going to put the relay in with it running and see how it shifts. I suspect it won't shift right until I shut the key off and restart it. Time will tell.......

OK, I went out and did some experimenting. I first drove the truck with the ASD relay in place and confirmed it shifted properly. Next I pulled the relay with the truck running and it still shifted. I shut the truck off and restarted it and IT DID NOT SHIFT! I plugged the relay back in and I could feel it click as it pulled the coil in and it shifted again! Can anyone tell me exactly what the ASD solenoid is supposed to do????

Looking around in my books, the ASD goes to the transmission relay and also goes to the alternator.

So, ISX, you might want to hook this back up and see of your gauges come back to life.

His gauges didn't go out so I don't see why mine would. Seems to be an auto thing.

Mine also didn't quit charging. I wonder if that part would be a 24 valve thing since the 12v uses the CPS and PCM for charging....
