I just wonder how close that is to thompson shaft. This shaft is all shiny and looks like a polished up piece of steel, but you take a file to it and the file won't touch it. The only way to machine it was with a ceramic insert.

According to the HRC ratings, they are identical. Yeah that means even a new scotch bright won't scratch it. I like my mothers stuff now that I figured out if I stick it in the mill I can polish them up in a few seconds I wondered why the collet hadn't left any marks on the tip, now I know why.

My only question is how do you get the holes cleaned out real good if solvent won't do much?

I never saw a problem with the holes. Seems to me the constant fuel running through them keeps them clean enough. But if they were somehow dirty, I would think you could use a tip hole cleaner thinger like they have for oxy-acetylene torches.

These things http://www.weldfabulous.com/Torch-Ti...-p6122039.html

I don't think tip cleaners get small enough to fit in the holes of an injector. If the do you could really call them shower nozzles!!

I wasn't sure if they did or didn't. I really do think they self clean from the pressure and constant fuel flow. But knowing me I might be wrong, but I haven't seen any that were bad inside the hole.

At that point that small amount in the nozzle holes could be burnt out rather easy enough and hitch up a trailer and try to hold 1100-1200 EGT for at least 5 miles that would deal with that problem rather quickly.

Carbon will ignite and burn at 1000*F...

But ash deposits (from WEO or ATF) on the other hand might be a total loss of the injector(s) since you may or may not get it burned off.

At one time Cummins did promote the use of waste engine oil at a concentration of I believe to be not more than 5%. I don't believe they do now and I was told that ATF is a real NO NO due to the fact it does not lubricate as an oil would and would lead to scoring of pumps and injectors. Like Michael said, just work it for a few miles and it will be 'self cleaning'.

Yeah I remember those days of Cummins using up to 5% lube oil in the fuel (WEO) but most will tell you no soley because of the amount of ASH in the WEO or ATF. Then other problem like today ATF has anti-sorching compunds to allow ATF take more heat and then friction modifers... Oh boy great combo for injectors and injection pump.

If you'd to go back in time and look at what engine oil and ATF was like in the 1970's it was pretty basic compared to all the additives they put in oil now... :sarcasm:
