Default Transfer Case Problem

Not my truck (obviously), but Nikki's truck (1998 Dodge Cummins 4WD). It sounds like the chain is slipping in it. Can anyone tell me what it will take to rebuild it? It is a NP 241DLD if that helps.

Here you go: TC

TC Chain

TC rebuild kit no chain

Now, about rebuilding one, use vaseline for needle bearings because it will mix with the oil. Other than that, I haven't a clue.

The TC you have on there is not the same one as hers. Hers is a 241 DLD. I wonder what else is trashed because the I had all four wheels off the ground and when the case made a bunch of noise the fronts wanted to stop turning.

They are pretty basic, most anyone with any kind of mechanical ability should be able to figure it out.

A pointer is to take it apart with the front half of the case laying downward as that is where everything stacks into. Could be something going bad in the planetary set.

Thanks for the pointer. It is a possibility that the planetarys have failed.

So, other than E-Bay, where is a decent reasonable place to get parts? I am hoping all I need is a chain and bearings, but I won't know until it is apart.

You might try Rock Auto.

Ditto on Rock auto and here is a 5% discount code that ends today.

I would also recommend http://quad4x4.com/.

Rock Auto is about $120 for a seal and bearing kit but doesn't have a chain that I can find. Quad 4X4 is about $600 for a rebuild kit that includes a chain.

edit: Rock auto has the complete case for $786.89 plus shipping of $71. Now I don't know if I should rebuild it myself or just replace it..........

Usually never need much for bearings inside them. You need to open it up and see what is wrong, I would not spend 800 if all it needs is a 100 dollar part.
