Default Starter??

Well, truck in sig. has an occational won't start moment. i.e. when I turn key to start it clicks once and quits. I repeat key turn a coulpe of times and it starts. I put 2 new 1000 cold cranking amp batteries in 2 months ago with clean cable clamps. Volt meter reads 12.58 engine off and 13.67 to .75 at idle. on both batteries. I believe the starter is stock. Truck has 165k. Do I take the starter off to test OR new starter, starter solenoid? Other options? Thanks Dave.

You need to pull the starter and replace the starter contacts in the solenoid. Pretty easy job, just a pain to get the starter off (the bolts can be real tight). The bolts have a 10 mm 12 point head on them. Order the parts here: http://startercontacts.com/ The parts are a lot more heavy duty than stock, and you will have them real quick. If you do get stranded because the starter won't go have someone turn the key and take a hammer or some other object and tap on the starter and it should go.

It sure sounds like the contacts need replacing. Eventually it will get to where it will just click and nothing else OR the contacts will burn and stick causing you to replace the shut down solenoid because when the contacts stick it backfeeds power into the start windings of the solenoid and it will burn out the windings.

Yep, I put the Larry B's kit in both mine and my daughter's truck. It really is a simple fix. Take a look at this video to see what you need to do:

Tom, I"ll have the kit tomorrow, how tough is the soldering, Will that hold the big copper wires to the side of the starter case? Or did you weld yours? I'm on limited starts. I crawled under it this morning I can hear the starter dragging. I think I also was hearing some tranny noise, like the kind a idler pulley makes when it's going bad See ya Dave.

I didn't need to do any soldering on the two I fixed. All I needed to do was change the contacts in the solenoid.
