Default Cummins VP 44 idling high...

After driving for an extended period of time using cruise control, the engine will idle high at 1000-1100 RPM. It will not go below that until I shut the truck off and restart it. Anyone have any insight into this?

The first thing that comes to mind is the cable for the cruise, but it should stick anytime cruise is used. The next thing is a possible APPS problem. I had a car that would act similarly and it was a sticky TPS, so you maybe try pulling the APPS and see if it is operating smoothly.

The 24v has no cable for the cruise, it is done through the PCM or ECM, not sure which. I have not pulled the APPS off yet to see if it is working right. No codes are being thrown or showing up.

Oh yea, I forgot that you have fly by wire...... Guess I was still thinking of my 12V..... Now you have me wondering since the cruise is computer controlled if the ECM wants 850 RPM and the engine is at 1000+ RPM you would think there would be a code thrown. I guess I would still check the APPS first.

Not yet, I did drive my truck yesterday, but did not use the cruise, so no change.

My truck would do this good while back. I dont have a clue what was wrong. I stopped doing it after I replaced the ECM. I did not replace it for this problem, it just crapped out and the truck was undriveable.

APPS is most likely stuck in THROTTLING mode which will produce the problem you got. Verify your APPS sensor voltage is BELOW the tag voltage and measured at the APPS sensor not the PCM.

Correct method.
