Default Rear Axle Question

First of all, yea, the rear axle in my truck is due for an oil change. I am running Amsoil synthetic 75w90 (I think) and it has been a few years since I changed it, but lately when I make a left turn the rear axle makes a noise that is real hard to explain. I believe it is the clutches jumping and you can feel it in the truck. The more power used to turn the more pronounced the noise and the more you can feel it. For some reason it won't do it on a right turn and it used to do it only when loaded, but now it will do it empty. Is it possible the clutches are failing or is it just a need for an oil change?

Might be time to open up the differential and inspect the clutch packs and see if they are wore out. There is a rebuild kit for limited slip differentials.

Where can a person get the rebuild kits from? How much work is it to rebuild the clutch packs? Also, what about changing and upgrading the axle itself to get disk brakes? Just trying to weigh all my options......

Take a peek on RockAuto.Com at least then you have part number and can call local part stores with the part number and see what's in stock.

If I was to upgrade to disc rears I would change the entire rear axle and then look for a standard diff axle from a 2001.5 or newer. This would be easier than converting the axles over, change brake cable, brake hoses, etc.

That sounds like a good plan.
edit: I just checked Rock Auto and from what I can see the clutch kit with shipping is $18.33. Is that right? It is that cheap??

That would be my plan, but, I wonder how much a decent axle with limited slip would run me. Probably more than the repairs would........

Most likely a standard diff would be cheaper in the long haul. Then you don't have to have to rebuild the clutch packs as much.

I've still haven't found a need for a LS diff yet. But that's just me...

I can't say as I "need" a limited slip axle, but then again I haven't "needed" 4wd either. Does it come in handy? You bet, but with limited slip you really need to be careful. I have had it want to put me in the ditch on a slippery side road with a little crown to it......

Tom, mine chattered really bad; more so in reverse when turning. The friction modifier had all but stopped working. I changed the rear diff fluid and added a tube of modifier and it fixed it..

OK, That is what I was hoping for. I was thinking the clutches were shot and they needed replaced. I am going to change the oil in it and see what happens.
