Default Me and Brakes

I just got back from a 2000 mile vacation with my fiver. Every time I go to North East Ohio I have had brake problems. One year it was a brake line, one year it was a mushy pedal, and this year I lost just about all trailer brakes and the brake pedal went just about to the floor. It was fun trying to get everything stopped..... Anyhow, I put a new trailer brake controller on and repaired the wiring on my trailer brakes (one was not working (broken wire) and the others had crappy connectors on them). I put a master cylinder on my truck because the pedal would pump up but it would slowly drop to the floor. With the new one on the pedal was more solid, but the pedal was almost touching the floor. I did bench bleed the M/C before installing it and bled the crap out of my brakes. STILL the same. I finally had my old neighbor look at it (he is a mechanic by trad specilizing in hydraulics) and he was stumped for a while. He decided to look at the shoes though an inspection hole in the backing plate and saw the right rear shoes were about 1/4" away from the drum! Seems like the self adjuster is not even there and the brake somehow backed itself off. Once the rear brakes were adjusted up the pedal was great! Now once the temperature cools off I will be pulling the drums to see what the brakes look like. Chances are they need replaced but I don't know what hardware I will need.

I was never a fan of self adjusting brakes I still to this day adjust up the shoes on Mom's 1996 Dodge Ram by hand and skip relying on the self adjusters.

I am not saying I am relying on the self adjusters to keep the brakes adjusted, but to keep the adjusters from backing off. I still get under there and adjust them.

Just buy a newer truck with disc brakes and switch them out, then part out the rest of the truck.....

That would be a lot easier if I had an income!! Starting retirement sucks..........financial wise.
