Default School me in Ford IDI engines

Hey Gang... Time for the Mopar1973Man to learn a bit more. I got a Ford IDI diesel ambulance we are setting up for vehicle extrication. What pitfalls, problems, issues I've got to be aware of? I've just got done replacing all the fuel hose between the injectors for return lines. I know the fuel filter base is leaking out of the fuel heater plug on top. Is there a fix for that if any?

For the most part I know that you must keep the oil level up so the HPOP pump can do it's job. Here is a place that can help you quite a bit: http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/idi.htm He has a lot of good info there, but I did see some things that I personally don't agree with such as using ATF to fill the fuel filter. As far as your fuel heater leaking I found this:

The fuel heater "package" part number is # 1816602C91. (an IH part #)

Their part number for the O ring that fits on the connector insulator where it protrudes thru the top of the fuel filter assembly is # 1811053C1.

It has been claimed that a Viton # 016 or Viton # 002-272-016 will work.

This is a non-turboed Ford IDI 7.3 Diesel. No HPOP pump just the old school rotary injection pump.

Here is a picture that close to it but no turbo on ours... Filter at D

From what I have found out there is a known issue with the 'O' rings on the fuel heater but they are available. Some have had the injector 'O' rings leak. They are also prone to the fuel line dry rotting and causing air leaks.

All the return rail line have been replaced. The o-rings appear to be holding really well and not leaking. But the fuel heater appears to be glued into the filter base like some has already tried fixing it with epoxy.

You can check these numbers: Ford #F2TZ-9J294-A International #1816602C91 I think they are still accurate. I also found some other filter(s) that can be used for replacement/upgrade:


I was informed that the #3617 is the best choice due to the WIF port.

Yeah I know when you look at that compared to the Dodge's we own it like where is the engine under all the air filter, tubes and wiring.

But still in all its a Ford IDI 7.3 diesel. It's what was given to our fire dept for extrication vehicle. I was Riggins, ID last vehicle for the exact purpose and the upgrade and handed this one down to us.

So it say out in a field for about 2 years. Now I've gotten certified for extrication I figured I might as well kick this in the shorts and get us geared up and using our own equipment. Last few calls we handed off the called to neighboring areas because nothing was setup nor anyone had the training to do it. So in November myself and one other fire fighter will hold a class for our group and train them properly on how to do it.
